The Stateside Component

This U.S-based intensive undergraduate program is intended to assist qualified students in attaining the ACTFL Intermediate-Mid/Intermediate-High level in Swahili language proficiency. The program is intended for all undergraduate students, (majors and non-majors in Swahili) and heritage speakers of Swahili.

Undergraduates of the Stateside Swahili Flagship Program will be eligible to apply for the summer program. The Stateside Program is administered by Howard University. Students interested in the Program should send application materials to Howard University: http://www.howard.edu/

The Overseas Component

American Councils administers the Swahili Overseas Flagship Program in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The Program starts in summer 2010, and is located on the campus of The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) in Zanzibar, Tanzania http://www.suza.ac.tz/

Students on the Swahili Overseas Program study in Zanzibar for the summer program. This program is intended as a logical step after participating in the stateside undergraduate Swahili Flagship Program and achieving a proficiency level of ACTFL Intermediate-Mid/Intermediate-High level in Swahili language proficiency

 

Orientation

  1. Flagship Participant Handbook which contains detailed information on the academic and cultural program at the State university of Zanzibar  language Center, as well as general information on student life in Tanzania
  2. Pre-departure orientation program: Washington, DC, June 15-16, 2010
  • Pre-Departure Testing - ACTFL OPIs, AC Structure, AC Reading, AC Listening
  • Expectations, logistics, program nuts and bolts, health and safety information, informational sessions on self-managed learning, seminar on cultural adaptation and readjustment

        3. In-country Orientation Program: Tanzania, June 19-20, 2010

 

Academic Program

  • Intensive small-group instruction at local universities
  • Guest speakers and frequent weekly excursions
  • Daily meetings with individual language tutors who are selected from professors teaching at local universities
  • Discipline-based course in the participant's area of specialization - Fall semester
  • Professional internship - Spring semester

Formal language learning is further reinforced through the following Informal Components:

  • Home-stays with a local host family
  • Opportunities to engage in local service projects (local schools, orphanages, health services, and other areas of student interest)
