In the first semester, all students will take one subject-area course or seminar alongside Russian university students. Program staff will help the students identify courses in their areas of current or potential professional interest. All students are required to take special (direct enrollment) courses for credit. Heritage students may also be required to take a direct enrollment course, in addition to other workload, in the spring semester, but this depends on each heritage student's individual schedule and academic needs.
Students may take special (direct enrollment) courses at any St. Petersburg State University department of their choosing, or at another participating university in St. Petersburg. Students should discuss their direct enrollment options and credit requirements with their home departments and domestic Flagship directors in advance of the overseas year in St. Petersburg. American Councils will assist students in making contact and identifying appropriate content courses in St. Petersburg. American Councils will facilitate this process, including providing official documentation of academic course work completed at a university in St. Petersburg.
