The Language Flagship
The Language Flagship leads the nation in designing, supporting, and implementing programs for advanced language education using an innovative partnership with the federal government, education, and business. The Language Flagship seeks to educate students who will be the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of proficiency in one of many languages critical to U.S. competitiveness, security, and diplomacy. The Language Flagship's goal is to develop global professionals by raising the language proficiency of students to the ACTFL "Superior" level (ILR 3, 3+) and ACTFL "Distinguished" level (ILR 4, 4+).
The Turkish Flagship Program is designed as an innovative overseas language program for students in all fields of study. The academic-year program at Ankara University/TÖMER consists of daily Flagship lectures, individual language partner tutorials, guest seminars, and direct enrollment courses at Ankara University/TÖMER in the students’ fields of specialization. Additionally, in the spring semester for one day a week students take internships in their fields of interest with commercial, governmental, or non-profit organizations, where Turkish serves as the principal language of professional communication. Students are expected to master professional discourse and registers sufficient for a broad range of communicative functions such as negotiation, presentations, impromptu interpretation, and representation of the host organization in a range of venues. Other program components include homestays with Turkish families and regular excursions and cultural events in and outside Ankara.
The summer program consists of daily TÖMER language courses and individual language partner meetings. The program is eight weeks long and covers Turkish conversation and composition. Informal program components include homestays and bi-weekly excursions and cultural events.
